Thursday 20th September – St Stephen’s Church, Gloucester Road. 7pm
Holst: St Paul’s Suite
Britten: Violin Concerto
Brahms: Symphony No.2
Conductor Michael Cobb
Violin Matthew Bethel
Fitting with the theme of Britain, our September concert boasts an exciting focus on Benjamin Britten with the performance of his Violin Concerto. With his centenary just around the corner in 2013, Britten is seen as a central figure to 20th Century music in the UK. We are excited to announce Matthew Bethel, a recent graduate from the Royal Academy of Music, as our soloist. Matthew has performed the concerto whilst studying at the Academy, and was the principal violinist for Vitae’s début concert.
Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 will dominate the second half of the evening, forming the second part of our Brahms cycle. The composer, having only written four symphonies, is widely known for his delicate yet complex chamber works. All four of his symphonies are also magnificently scored masterpieces. As they are so well known within the classical repertoire, Orchestra Vitae wishes to refresh and engage the audience with a developed interpretation, and a large scoop of enthusiasm!
